Default Creating ground

What do you guys use as material to represent the ground under your figures? Right now, I'm satisfied with white paper, since I don't have enough of my Schleich Knights to really need vegetation for them as yet. But in the weekend, I was planning to get to work on a landscape where I can "deploy my troops" as I go along with my collecting.

I was thinking about just using a thin grey-green cloth. That should still put the attention on my armies and I can then decorate at will with stones and pieces of wood that I have already collected. I could also paint that cloth some. Like make a road (or rather a path - I'm creating the Middle Ages here!) and so on on it.
